Atocha-Cercanías station arose from the complete remodeling of the Atocha station, built between 1985 and 1992.
In operation, the original station Madrid-Atocha It was replaced in its functions by two new stations: Madrid-Puerta de Atocha, intended to receive high-speed lines and trains that end at the station; and Atocha-Cercanías, intended for through trains heading towards the Tunnels of Laughter. Thus Atocha-Cercanías becomes the main node of the core of Cercanías Madrid, being a transit station for all the lines of the network (except C-9). In the future, work will be done on expanding the station, with the inclusion of two new tracks and a platform.
